TIVERTON — West Place Animal Sanctuary is a home of last resort for an array of creatures including unwanted or injured farm animals, wild geese, ducks and other birds and animals. Some of the residents are refugees from the horrific Westport animal tenant ‘farm,’ called the biggest cruelty case in the northeast; others are survivors of the deep freeze that killed countless geese and ducks a few winters ago.
And what a home it is, offering clean, safe shelter in one of Tiverton’s most beautiful places.
On Saturday, August 5, all are welcome to take a look at the sanctuary and meet the residents when West Place opens for a once-a-year open house.
Owner Wendy Taylor says it will be “Fun and educational, about 45 minutes long with the chance to interact with horses, goats, sheep, alpaca and all kinds of ducks and birds.” Among them is knock-kneed Peepers (a wild turkey found as an orphaned two-day-old on a Bristol golf course), who will celebrate her seventh birthday.
It’s a “chance to learn about feeding, care, physical therapy, wildlife, humane treatment, and to see all the food we grow for the animals and how we do it. Explore the gardens See the pond.
“We’ll have a learning circle at the end of each tour for kids that want to compare types of wool, feathers and eggs.
There will be the ability to talk to the volunteers for anyone interested in volunteering or being part of the internship programs, and they’ll have have signups for the newsletter.
“And we’ll have lots of products for sale that are made here or made by our volunteers, as well as shirts, hats and other great stuff with our logo so they can show their support for animals.”
The sanctuary, at 3198 Main Road, Tiverton, will offer tours at 10, 11, 12 and 1 and no reservations are necessary.
Well-behaved children and adults are welcome and donations of $5/child and $7/adult will help feed the creatures you'll meet. “We promise you'll fall in love,” Ms. Taylor adds.
